The Washington Township Land Trust of Morris County, Inc. is sponsoring a program to re-introduce native trees into the local environment. Currently our planting site is the Land Trust’s Mill Pond Park, situated along the South Branch of the Raritan River in Long Valley. This park adjoins the Columbia Trail andis easily accessible behind Toll Brothers Regency on Fairview Avenue (formerly Welsh Farms.)

We have already planted PawPaw trees along Frying Pan Tree Trail and Persimmon trees await transplanting from our “plant nursery” within the park. Our next tree of choice is the Sweet Gum tree.

Sponsoring a tree is the perfect gift for friends and family who have everything. Recipients of the gift will be listed on our web site and also in our Obadiah LaTourette Grist and Saw Mill on East Mill Road in downtown Long Valley. A certificate will be sent to the donor to present to the recipient. To sponsor a tree for yourself or as a gift, we request a donation of $35. The trees will be planted in appropriate locations throughout the park.

Please help us “Go Native” and consider sponsoring or gifting a Sweet Gum tree. A check can be mailed to the Washington Township Land Trust at P.O. Box 4, Long Valley, NJ 07853, with your name and address and the gift recipient’sname. For more information, pleasecontact the Land Trust at obadiah1750@hotmail.com.

More information!

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET
On the third Wednesday of May, at 7 PM local around the world, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent pro-
test of the carnage taking place on the streets.

The David D. Hammar Foundation is organizing our local Ride of Silence this year in memory of David D. Ham-
mar, who passed away in 2006 from a cycling accident. This ride is dedicated not only to David, but in memory
of ALL those that have been killed or injured while cycling.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that has no registration. We simply as that you show up at 6:30 so that the
ride can leave promptly at 7:00 pm from Cycle Craft’s parking lot in Long Valley, NJ. We ask that all cyclists in
attendance ride together, at a pace of 10 – 12 for the entire duration of the 5 mile route, and that we all re-
main silent during the ride.

The ride hopes to raise cycling awareness during bike safety month to motorists, police, traffic engineers, in-
surance companies, and city officials. The ride is also a chance to mourn, in funeral procession style, those
who have already been killed.

The ride requests black arm bands be worn to remember someone that has passed away from an accident,
and a red arm band only if you have had a bike/motor vehicle accident. Helmets are required; bright clothing
and lights are highly recommended for the ride home. There are no fees charged for anyone to participate.

Thank you for your support and we hope to see everyone out for this short memorial / awareness ride.

For more information on course details and any updated information about the ride please check
out website, www.bicyclesafetynj.org or email Michael at michael@bicyclesafetynj.org

The Washington Township Land Trust is celebrating Katie Dickson’s Girl Scout Gold
Award project on Sunday, May 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Mill Pond Park in Long Valley.
At that time we will unveil our new trail map and information kiosk sign, located along
the Columbia Trail where it crosses our wildflower meadow on Fairview Avenue.

To fulfill the requirements for the Gold Award, Katie designed and printed a trail map of
Mill Pond Park, and designed and participated in the building of a kiosk sign to house the
trail map and other Land Trust information. To develop the map, she walked the trails
with a hand-held GPS, marking points of interest as well as the direction of the paths and
then transferred those points to a map of the property.

The celebration will be held rain or shine and the public is invited to join us, and then
enjoy a map-guided walk through Mill Pond Park.
